Women > Uneven Breasts

If you look closely, no two breasts are identical.

The typical amount of unevenness is unnoticeable and unevenness is not a health problem. It's an anaesthetic difference that most women accept with good grace.

The size and shape of breasts will change over time as one passes into adulthood, menstruates and has children. The unevenness rarely affects milk supply or the ability to lactate.

No one really knows why breasts sometimes develop unevenly, it maybe hormonal changes or injuries as a result of injuries to the breast bud area during sport.

It is possible that an underlying medical or skeletal condition may cause asymmetrical breasts. One such condition is called juvenile hypertrophy of the breast. This is a rare problem in which one breast grows significantly larger than the other, leading to physical and psychological problems. It is also possible that underlying fibroids or non-cancerous tumours may cause of asymmetry.

However, if there are sudden or recent differences in breast size due to underlying breast masses, these should be immediately evaluated by your doctor. Other possible causes include scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, and deformities in the chest wall.

If your breasts are uneven, you have several choices:

  1. Live with it as there is no harm or health risk.
     
  2. Most bra's camouflage the imbalance so that in day to day life, few people will notice. However, wearing a bra has been scientifically proved as unhealthy and may contribute to poor breast health.
